Several NHL GMs have begun to explore the trade market as they watch their teams struggle in the early going.
- The Penguins are believed to be looking at their options at goaltending, with Tristan Jarry generating some trade buzz. Jarry was dangled in the summer, and it's clear that management would consider moving their well paid but inconsistent veteran netminder. With Alex Nedeljkovic and rookie Joel Blomqvist in tow, the Pens may opt to jettison Jarry by trade or waivers simply to improve their cap flexibility moving forward.
- Rumblings have grown louder in Colorado, with de facto start Alexandar Georgiev stumbling out of the gate. He's far from alone in his struggles on a depleted Avs squad, but the waiver claim of journeyman Kaapo Kahkonen raised eyebrows. A situation to keep an eye on if Georgiev's struggles continue.
- Rumours have swirled around the Calgary Flames for most of the past calendar year, but some reports suggest the teardown many had expected is not in the cards, and perhaps the opposite. Despite their 4-0 start out of the gate, the Flames will look to make sensible trades with the future in mind but may not be looking to ditch the members of their core under contract.
- One name that might still be in play is Rasmus Andersson, the veteran blueliner who is slated to hit free agency in 2026. I also personally think pending UFAs like Dan Vladar, Anthony Mantha and Andrei Kuzmenko are still likely to be dangled before the deadline if extensions aren't worked out in good time.
- On the other hand, the Flames are believed to be looking to do a bit of addition as well. Young centerman don't grow on trees, but Calgary is believed to be looking to bolster their center ice with a player who might fit with their plans moving forward. The Flames look to be busy this season, whether they're buyers, sellers, or a bit of both.
- Utah, who have struggled to keep the puck out of their net despite their hot start, are believed to be exploring the defenseman market. Among the names that have been linked to Utah are Leafs defenseman Timothy Liljegren, who has been heavily talked about in the NHL rumour mill this past month.
