NHL Rumour Report: Preseason rumour buzz as NHL trade talks ramp up

The latest chatter around the NHL with regular season games fast approaching.

- His injury status is likely to push any deal back, but Arthur Kaliyev extending with the Kings this past month does not preclude a trade at some point this season. Kaliyev, who is still judged by some to be a player with untapped upside, would like a bigger opportunity than the one afforded to him so far in Los Angeles.

- The Blue Jackets continue to scour forward trade market to shore up a roster that has lost so much on and off the ice in the late Johnny Gaudreau. They also subtracted Patrik Laine, leaving a lot of big holes on the roster. Expect them to make a move for a veteran or two, despite already adding winger James van Riemsdyk.

- Mitch Marner is likely to be a topic of discussion in the coming weeks, with the pending 2025 UFA's contract status hanging over the Leafs as they enter the season. Both sides continue to keep a fairly solid lid on the rumours, but the general vibe seems to be that both sides are working toward a contract extension. There is even some chatter that a push is on to get a deal done before the regular season begins. The Golden Knights and Predators are among the teams that have kicked tires on Marner, and will be ones to watch if this saga continues into the summer of 2025.

- Not a gigantic surprise, but rumours suggest Jonathan Huberdeau has communicated to the Flames that he is willing to be flexible with his no trade clause if an offer comes along. The Flames would love to shed his massive contract, but may have a tough time doing so without serious salary retention and valuable assets attached.

- Nothing on the frontburner with Leafs winger Nick Robertson now that the disgruntled winger ultimately signed an extension, but I still think there's a solid chance he's moved before the NHL trade deadline this season. The player wants out and the organization clearly isn't enamoured with him. That said, if Robertson shows he can contribute this season, a decision could get punted to the summer of 2025.

- Sorry for the Leafs overload, but there is some scuttlebutt around forwards Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf. Toronto has too many forwards and barring an injury, something has to give. As is often the case, teams manage to avoid trades if they don't need to make them, but something to keep an eye on as we move forward this season.
