The veteran sniper is hoping to hitch onto his next NHL team ahead of training camp.
- Max Pacioretty appears close to signing on with a new NHL team as the start of training camp approaches.
- A stumbling block has been in convincing a team to sign him to a contract rather than the uncertainty of a professional tryout.
- The Red Wings and Maple Leafs are rumoured to be at the forefront of teams with interest, but if he were to have a promising training camp tryout there could be plenty more. But Pacioretty is rumoured to be after a bonus-laden contract that would come with a lower AAV with rewards for games played and performance. That might be good for some NHL franchises, but a lot of teams dislike the medium-term cap implications of bonuses.
- It's rumoured the Leafs would like to bring him in on a PTO and are open to a low-dollar contract that is easily moveable, either to another team or shuffled to the AHL free of cap penalty. It would certainly be a sight to see the former captain of the rival Montreal Canadiens wearing the Blue and White. September 10 update: the Maple Leafs now appear to be the frontrunner for Pacioretty.
- A 36 year old with two Achilles tears to his name might not be the most appealing player left of the free agent scrapheap. Then again, his six 30 goal seasons and over 900 games of NHL experience could be alluring to contending teams looking to fill out their middle six forward corps.
