Nothing is off the table for the Flames as they begin a necessary and thorough franchise overhaul.
- The Flames roster turnover, which began in earnest last year, is likely to intensify this season with rumours suggesting the Flames are all ears on veterans such as Nazem Kadri, Mackenzie Weegar, Jonathan Huberdeau and Rasmus Andersson. Kadri's five years at a $7 million AAV might scare away some teams, but it just takes one team, or one desperate GM, to go all-in.
- Kadri is reportedly willing to be flexible on his no movement clause, but would prefer a move further East closer to his hometown Toronto (before you get any ideas, I doubt Toronto has the cap flexibility to do this). Before acquiring Elias Lindholm, the Bruins were believed to have explored a Kadri trade.
- The Flames are also believed to be listening on defenseman Rasmus Andersson, who has two years left at a reasonable $4.5 million AAV. Kadri and Andersson saw their names in the rumour mill most of last season.
- Even well-paid veterans like defenseman Mackenzie Weegar and winger Jonathan Huberdeau have appeared in trade rumour columns for much of the past calendar year. I don't see many teams biting on Huberdeau and his onerous $10.5 million AAV for the next seven seasons. The Flames appear determined to take this roster down to the wood after several years of mediocrity, but not all of these guys will be easy to move.
- Calgary's inevitable teardown and rebuild makes it a team to watch this season. It's time. For many Flames fans, it's overdue.
