A mixed bag of NHL trade rumours as training camp draws near.
- Yaroslav Askarov Watch continues with NHL training camps fast approaching. While anything is possible, rumours have long suggested a trade was unlikely this summer, but could happen closer to the trade deadline in 2025. It's believed the Predators talked Askarov trade with Montreal and San Jose in the past, but it's unclear if those conversations are ongoing. Barring an injury somewhere around the league, I'm not seeing a lot of full-time NHL opportunities for Askarov, who will likely continue to press for a trade as we inch towards the season. UPDATE: Askarov has been traded to the Sharks.
- While the Blue Jackets got one major item off their docket in shipping out winger Patrik Laine, there's more to come in the months ahead. Reports suggest the Jackets would still like to move off of goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, and would listen to offers on veteran forward Boone Jenner. Jenner is more likely a trade deadline deal, if at all, as he obviously plays a major role as the team's captain.
- New GM Don Waddell's other main priority will be calming the waters on two of their youngsters in Kent Johnson and David Jiricek, both of whom have seen their names in the rumour mill the odd time.
- Reports suggest UFA defenseman Tyson Barrie is getting closer to choosing a team. The 33 year old puckmover is looking for opportunity rather than salary at this point in his career. Multiple teams have kicked tires.
- All signs point towards a Leon Draisaitl extension some time before the start of the NHL season. That's hardly breaking news, but what is interesting is that he'd apparently be willing to go the full 8 years on a deal in order to keep the cap hit down for Edmonton - knowing mega-extensions for Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard are coming down the road.
