Trade talks continue around the NHL with the offseason well underway.
- Considering where we are in the NHL calendar, there's still quite a lot percolating on the trade market.
- One of the teams to watch are the Hurricanes, who continue to talk trades with multiple teams while scouring the free agent market. Carolina is considered the current frontrunner for Erik Karlsson, but is getting stiff competition from Pittsburgh. All sides want Karlsson to be moved well before training camp, but the Sharks are willing to be patient until the right deal comes along.
- A new name has surfaced on the trade market out of Carolina as well: Teuvo Teravainen. The offensive-minded winger struggled at times this season through injury and inconsistency, and could be on the move to make cap space for a bigger deal.
- They also continue to drum up interest for defenseman Brett Pesce, who they would like to keep but will move if no extension is in sight. Among the teams that have been linked to Pesce are the Oilers, Sabres, Stars, Leafs and Predators.
- It's interesting that the Hurricanes' rumoured trade to bring back Tony DeAngelo from the Flyers never materialized. Perhaps we'll get some clarity on their level of interest in him (now that he's bought out) once the bigger shoes drop in Carolina.
- All seems quiet on the Leafs front, but there's a lot going on below the surface. Expect major decisions in the next few days on goalies Ilya Samsonov, Matt Murray and perhaps a free agent third stringer (Brian Elliott?) who can be there if Joseph Woll falters.
- The Devils might have Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid pencilled in at goalie for the start of this season, but they continue to scour the trade market for an upgrade. Connor Hellebuyck has been widely rumoured as an option, but John Gibson is also among the names being bandied about.
- And we're still waiting on several big name trade chips such as Mark Scheifele, Elias Lindholm, Noah Hanifin, Mikael Backlund, Evgeny Kuznetsov, free agents Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane, as well as how the Bruins pivot if one or both Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci retire. Lots to talk about as the summer rolls along.
