NHL Rumour Report: Post-trade deadline rumblings

Rumours of trades that fell through but could happen in the offseason have surfaced in the trade deadline aftermath.

- Just as interesting as some of the deals that happened are the trade rumours that surfaced and could still materialize in the offseason. And there's been no shortage of buzz around the futures of several superstars such as Evgeni Malkin, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Kris Letang.

- There are rumblings that the Canadiens and Senators were talking about a fairly sizeable trade throughout the day on Monday that fell through. Some speculation suggests it could have involved Sens forward Colin White.

- Vegas was talking to teams about a potential Reilly Smith trade in an effort to create cap space, but nothing materialized. The Knights ended up trading Evgenii Dadonov instead in a move that could end up being nixed by the NHL due to an overlooked no trade clause.

- And there are teams that looked at roster overhauls and couldn't get it done pre-deadline. At the top of that list is the Vancouver Canucks; none of JT Miller, Brock Boeser or Conor Garland were dealt. All three generated plenty of trade chatter, and at least one of them is expected to be moved ahead of the NHL draft in July. Many of the teams that had interest at the deadline are likely to circle back in the months ahead.

 - The Blackhawks were busy, trading Brandon Hagel and pending UFA Marc-Andre Fleury for a haul of future assets. But the rebuild is far from over, and their two core pieces of Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are going to generate plenty of trade buzz moving forward.

- A lesser talked about storyline that is sure to pick up momentum in the months ahead is the future of the Pittsburgh Penguins core. Veterans Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Bryan Rust are all pending UFAs, and early rumblings suggest it's not likely that all three will be back, especially after the Pens locked up money on another veteran in Jeff Carter.

- Free agent frenzy doesn't kick off for NHLers until July, but teams are already starting to swarm the KHL and college free agent markets. Among the big names that teams are fighting over: KHL forward Andrei Kuzmenko.

- Plenty of rumours ahead even with the trade deadline behind us. We're in a bit of a post-deadline lul, but teams are sure to begin pivoting towards the next big dates: the draft and free agency. Stay tuned!
