NHL Rumour Report: Jonathan Toews rumours swirl

There's still plenty of hockey to be played, but the Toews rumours have begun to intensify.

- Jonathan Toews is starting to sound like a player who could use a change of scenery.

- An exasperated Toews admitted to reporters that he has begun to think of life after the Blackhawks, the franchise he led to three Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

- Toews, along with teammate Patrick Kane, are pending UFAs in 2023. And with new GM Kyle Davidson declaring the start of a full scale rebuild, those two players have entered the NHL trade rumour mill.

- Toews has stated on previous occasions his aversion to taking part in a rebuild. Perhaps in response, the team under GM Stan Bowman added Seth Jones and Marc-Andre Fleury in the 2021 offseason to take one last crack at a playoff run with Toews and Kane. That fell flat, and Davidson, promoted mid-season, is now intent on tearing things down and starting again. That, combined with substandard play from Toews himself due to a combination of illness and injury, have made for a rotten few years.

- Early rumblings suggest the Boston Bruins as a potential fit for Toews. With Boston still feeling the absence of David Krejci down the middle, Toews could slide in nicely.

- If the rumours are true, Boston would be far from alone in their pursuit of Toews. His cap hit of 10.5 million is onerous for most teams, but with only one year left and the possibility of salary retention, there ought to be a fit somewhere.
