NHL Rumour Report: Avalanche are up to something "big"

The Avalanche find themselves at the center of several major bidding wars ahead of the March 21st trade deadline.

- Few teams are expected to be as active on the buyer's market this year as the Colorado Avalanche.

- Considering the roster shakeup that is likely to take place this offseason, the Avs are looking at this deadline as an 'all-in' situation. Virtually no asset is off the table.

- Colorado is reportedly up to something 'pretty big', and that likely includes one or more of the best forwards on the trade market.

- Trade talks between the Avs and Canucks continue to heat up. JT Miller is believed to be a primary target, but Brock Boeser is a possibility as well. The Canucks are reportedly looking at young defensemen, with rumours continually linking Bowen Byram to Vancouver in trade talks.

- They also continue to be in on Claude Giroux, although some reports suggest they are falling behind other teams such as Florida and St. Louis in the bidding war.

- Pending UFA forward Tomas Hertl is high on Colorado's list, although the Sharks remain intent on extending him before March 21st. If that goes belly up in the next week or so, expect to hear trade chatter pick up again.

- Colorado have also let the Blackhawks know that Patrick Kane would be of interest if or when he is put on the trade block. Things are fairly quiet on that front right now - Kane seems more likely to be dealt in the offseason, if at all.

- As a fallback option, the Avs are also believed to be kicking tires on Jets forward Andrew Copp.

- This deadline is shaping up to be a buyer's market, with the Avalanche as willing as anyone to bust open the warchest and spend. The game of chicken between buyers and sellers is close to hitting the tipping point - stay tuned for more.
