NHL Rumour Report: Giroux deal imminent; blockbuster pieces involved

The Claude Giroux sweepstakes appear to be almost over.

- Reports suggest one team has emerged as a heavy favourite to land the top forward on the rental market.

- Pending UFA Claude Giroux is taking the ice tonight in his 1000th NHL game and likely last for the Flyers. By Monday, he is all but guaranteed to be wearing a different sweater.

- Reports now suggest the Florida Panthers are trending in the right direction towards landing Giroux. It's no secret that the Panthers were at the top of his list, and are a team that has the assets Philadelphia needs to pull the trigger.

- The package for Giroux is rumoured to include Owen Tippett, and perhaps one or more of Aleksi Heponiemi, Grigori Denisenko and Mackie Samoskevich. It's not clear if picks will be involved, especially after the Panthers dealt a first in a trade with Montreal to acquire Ben Chiarot.

- It's not over til' it's over, but it sure sounds like the Panthers are in the driver's seat to win the Giroux derby. The Avalanche, Hurricanes and Blues will continue to hold out hope. Tomorrow could be a big day on the Giroux front.
