The Claude Giroux sweepstakes took a new twist this week with two new contenders surfacing.
- Among the teams known to have kicked tires on Claude Giroux in recent weeks are the Avalanche, Blues and Wild. It's rumoured the Avalanche are a strong frontrunner, and Giroux himself is believed to be interested in that possibility. Giroux's no trade list combined with his stature in the Flyers organization means this is ultimately his call.
- It's believed two new teams have emerged in the Giroux sweepstakes: one of them being the Florida Panthers. Seemingly in the mix for every player available this trade deadline, the Panthers have the assets and will to make it happen.
- Although not directly linked to Giroux talks so far, Panthers forward Owen Tippett's name has been out there.
- The other team rumoured to now be in the mix are the Carolina Hurricanes, who seem to be in on pretty much every big name forward. Also believed to be sniffing around the defenseman market for players like Jakob Chychrun, John Klingberg and Ben Chiarot, the 'Canes will be a team to watch as we get closer to March 21st.
- Giroux is expected to meet with Flyers brass to discuss his future before officially being put on the trade block. Until then, trade discussions between the Flyers and other teams will be preliminary.
