Rumour Report: Latest on Jesse Puljujarvi Sweepstakes

The Jesse Puljujarvi Sweepstakes took a new turn this week.

  • The stalemate between the Edmonton Oilers and Jesse Puljujarvi continues to drag on as the December 1st deadline approaches.
  • Puljujarvi has taken his talents back to Finland, and has thus far refused to back off his demand to be traded. Puljujarvi's stated desire is to continue playing in Finland unless he is moved. The Oilers have made it clear that they will trade Puljujarvi only if their demands are met.

  • Several teams, including the Hurricanes, Lightning, Senators and Rangers have kicked tires at various points.
  • EDIT: the Canadiens and Coyotes are also being linked to Puljujarvi.
  • The Rangers, in particular, sound to be keenly interested in bringing in Puljujarvi, who might fit in nicely with the young core that includes rookie winger and fellow Fin Kaapo Kakko.

  • Puljujarvi has recently stated his focus is to remain in Finland. He appears to be content to stand pat with his demands, as do the Oilers who refuse to trade him until the price is met. However, it's hard to not see Puljujarvi rushing back immediately if his rights were moved to a new NHL team.
  • The Oilers aren't in any rush to move Puljujarvi, unless they think it can help them acquire an asset for their 2020 playoff push. The RFA winger's rights remain with their organization for pretty much as long as they want. This could be a gruelling, protracted stalemate that extends well beyond this season.
