Rumour Report: Trouba rumours intensify as trade odds soar

The Jets may have no choice but to move on from pending RFA defenseman Jacob Trouba.

The Jets have tried to kick the can down the road as long as possible, but it feels like Jacob Trouba's time in Winnipeg may soon be over.

Trouba has long avoided committing long term to the Jets. Despite the teams success in recent seasons, it still looks like he's headed out the door.

Trouba, it's believed, has long desired to return home to somewhere in the United States. Many have circled the Detroit Red Wings as a preferred destination, but plenty more teams are likely to inquire. The Islanders, Avalanche, Coyotes, Bruins and Stars have been linked to Trouba in the past.

Trouba appears to have priced himself out of Winnipeg, with his ask believed to be well over 8 million a season. The Jets simply don't have the dough to overpay him to stay, and many other pending RFA and UFAs need to be dealt with first. Patrik Laine and Kyle Connor won't be cheap.

Cap pressures and an unwillingness to commit long term makes Trouba a prime trade candidate. Some rumblings have suggested a player like Dustin Byfuglien, Nikolaj Ehlers or even Patrik Laine could be moved if they can somehow convince Trouba to stay.

There won't be many days off for GM Kevin Cheveldayoff this summer.
