Rumour Report: Oilers, Leafs trade talks to continue in the offseason

Trade talks on deadline day are likely to carry over into the summer.

  • As has been reported over the past couple of days, there was a lot of smoke around Connor Brown before the trade deadline. We're now slowly piecing together what might have been discussed - both internally and between the two teams.
  • A lot of reports suggested it was more the Oilers that were pushing for a deal for Connor Brown than the Leafs trying to jettison him. Toronto plans on keeping Brown for this one last playoff run and then likely moving him in the summer. With Toronto's impending cap crunch, paying more than 2 million on a fourth liner doesn't make sense.
  • But Edmonton rightly sees Brown as more of a middle six guy than a fourth liner - but what do they have to offer Toronto?

  • A lot of buzz around whether Adam Larsson or Matt Benning was the defenseman being offered to the Leafs. Both were likely discussed as part of a larger package. With GM Peter Chiarelli out of the picture, the hesitation to consider moving Adam Larsson has subsided.
  • There have been reports that Nikita Zaitsev was discussed as well. Zaitsev's name can't stay out of the rumour mill, and he could likely be on the move this summer whether it's to Edmonton or elsewhere.
