Rumour Report: Kessel trade rumour surfaces

Reports have surfaced suggesting the Penguins will likely try to trade Phil Kessel.

  • Rumours suggest the Penguins may look to trade Phil Kessel at some point in the not so distant future. The 29 year old winger has helped Pittsburgh in their back-to-back Cup runs, but his success may have been tied in part to recently departed assistant coach Rick Tocchet. The belief is that the Pens management hasn't been thrilled with Kessel - including his underwhelming 23 goal regular season.
  • It might not be the worst idea from the Pens standpoint. Fresh off another Cup parade and still in the prime of his career, Kessel should fetch a decent return. The emergence of forwards like Jake Guentzel and Conor Sheary would lessen the blow of a Kessel deal as well.

  • For the longest time, Evgeni Malkin was the big salary forward that was always about to get traded. Now, it's Phil's turn.
  • Who might be interested in making a trade? When Toronto first dangled him on the market, the Panthers were seen as frontrunners alongside Pittsburgh. But organizational financial troubles likely rule them out this time around unless they can find a way to get the Pens to take back salary. The Wild, Kings, Flames and Islanders are all looking for scoring help on the wings. Would any of them be interested?
  • Kessel makes his debut on the trade rumour board at 30%.
