Rumour Report: Ovechkin trade rumours surface

Rumours suggest superstar winger Alex Ovechkin could be dealt this offseason after another disappointing playoffs with the Capitals.

  • Another year, another playoff failure for Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. But this time, it feels different. Ovie wasn't a factor in the Capitals game 7 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and many are concerned that this is a sign of things to come. To be fair to Ovechkin, wingers generally have less impact on the game, and was playing with a lower body injury sustained in the opening round.
  • Rumours suggest a small but growing number of people around the NHL think there's a real chance the Capitals trade Ovechkin this offseason. Despite his cap hit and age, there is no doubt a team with the financial wherewithal would jump all over a marquee player like Ovie.
  • Las Vegas is the first team that comes to mind when imagining a trade given the franchise's cap space and need to make a good first impression in the Las Vegas market. But if Ovechkin were genuinely made available, teams would be falling over themselves to make cap space.

  • As with all decisions, the Capitals ownership will have a major say in the matter. Ted Leonsis has been a long backer of his captain, but perhaps his tune has changed with the Caps playoff window closing.
  • An Ovechkin trade seems like a distant possibility right now, and cooler heads may prevail as the sting of this loss goes away. No doubt, this will be one of the busiest and most pivotal offseasons for the Capitals in recent memory.
