Rumour Report: Kovalchuk to return? Habs shakeup + more

Is Ilya Kovalchuk returning to the NHL? What does the future hold for key players in Montreal? And could the Flames be looking big name free agent goalies?

  • The Habs find themselves at a crossroads after another disappointing playoff exit. Expect rumours to swirl in Montreal this offseason, with trade speculation already existing around Max Pacioretty, Alex Galchenyuk and Tomas Plekanec. With Carey Price entering the final season of his contract, suggestions that his return isn't a sure thing are already cropping up.
  • Could an Ilya Kovalchuk derby be on the horizon? The 34 year old sniper is looking to make his NHL return after 'retiring' in 2013 to play in the KHL. You'd have to think a number of teams would be interested in his services, but he would have to play for the Devils (who own his rights) or gain approval of all 31 teams to be eligible to hit free agency. Kovalchuk was a point per game player in his three seasons with SKA St. Petersburg.

  • Reports suggest Brian Elliott's tenure in Calgary could be over. The pending UFA played well in stretches but ultimately came unraveled in the Flames' first round debacle against the Ducks. Marc-Andre Fleury and Ben Bishop were targets for GM Brad Treliving in the summer, so it's possible those options are revisited.
