Rumour Report: Tavares, Radulov rumours emerge

Are the Islanders putting together a contingency plan for a John Tavares trade? And is another derby for Alex Radulov looming?

  • It's no surprise that speculation is starting to ramp up around John Tavares the closer he inches to the end of his deal with the Islanders. Tavares would be an unrestricted free agent in 2018, but has repeatedly stated his preference to stay with the organization. Nonetheless, rumblings suggest the Isles could be working on a contingency plan to trade him if talks go off the rails in the summer. A trade seems like a longshot right now, but look no further than the Taylor Hall and P.K. Subban transactions as reasons to keep an open mind. And yes, a few months ago there were some rumblings that the Leafs would be keenly interested if the opportunity arose - although perhaps not any more. Without question, keeping Tavares in an Islanders uniform is the most important task of GM Garth Snow's career.

  • Reports indicate Alex Radulov is looking to cash in with an eight year deal with Montreal. If a deal can't be reached, we could be headed for another Radulov Sweepstakes this summer. Florida, Washington, Edmonton and Colorado expressed interest last year, but many more teams - including Vegas - are likely to make a pitch if he reaches July 1st.
  • Free agency rumours continue to emerge as the regular season comes to a close. Many teams are already pivoting towards the offseason and are planning ahead for the expansion draft, entry draft and free agency. The NHL Rumour Report free agency rumour board will launch very soon.
