New Year rumour buzz around the NHL

NHL Rumours: Duchene, Barrie, Landeskog

The NHL rumour mill continues to be relatively quiet this season, but that isn't likely to last as we get closer to the March 1st trade deadline.

Here are a few rumours to keep an eye on in the New Year:

- Plenty of discussion over what the Colorado Avalanche will get up to in 2017. With their playoff hopes quickly going down the drain, the team may be ready to pivot towards the future. Rumours surround Matt Duchene, who has generated interest from teams such as the Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders. Gabriel Landeskog has been in trade buzz since the offseason, where he was linked to the Anaheim Ducks. Jarome Iginla could be moved to a contender at the deadline in what might be his last shot at the Stanley Cup - perhaps with the Chicago Blackhawks. Some wonder what the Avs do with both Semyon Varlamov and Calvin Pickard, given that only one goalie per team can be protected in the NHL expansion draft. But it may not matter if Las Vegas aren't interested in either.

- Will the Penguins still trade Marc-Andre Fleury? They might not be able to if Matt Murray keeps getting injured. Nonetheless, buzz has pointed to the Jets, Stars, Flames and Blues as having interest. The Kings have been mentioned as another possibility, but with Budaj holding the fort and Quick's return on the horizon, they might not be willing to pay the price.

- It still seems like the Jets are considering making the inevitable Jacob Trouba trade sooner rather than later. As a refresher, the teams rumoured to have interest: Boston, Colorado, Detroit, Arizona, Edmonton, and the New York Islanders. Until their blueline gets healthy, though, this one will have to wait a little bit longer.

- Plenty more on the trade rumour board. Two months until the NHL trade deadline!
