After months of rumours and speculation, it's now official: Jacob Trouba has asked a trade. Trouba's reported request of a 6 million a year long term deal seems to have startled the Jets, who won't have a lot of spare change kicking around for future negotiations with players like Nikolaj Ehlers and Patrik Laine. With cornerstone defenseman Dustin Byfuglien locked up long term, many wondered if the Trouba negotiations might take a turn for the worse.
Regardless of the reasons for Trouba's trade request, be it location, role or money, the fact is that the Jets have been listening on Trouba offers for months, with many teams expressing interest.
Among those teams are the Avalanche, Red Wings, Sabres, Bruins, Coyotes, Oilers, Canadiens and Islanders. The Bruins and Coyotes sound to be the most eager.
The Jets maintain that the team needs a young elite defenseman in return. Perhaps the Ducks should pick up the phone and offer Cam Fowler, who might fit the bill. And if Travis Hamonic of the Islanders still wants to return home to Winnipeg, he might want let the management know soon.
Other theories have suggested the New York Rangers as a possibility. Unlikely, as it's believed the asking price is sky high: Ryan McDonagh. The Maple Leafs are another team that some have linked to Trouba.
Jets fans have to hope that things get resolved in a similar fashion to the Lightning negotiations with Jonathan Drouin, who rescinded his request after the team found him more ice time. However, many wonder if the real issue in this negotiation is about money, not role.
