While July 1st was as wild as it's ever been, the days following have been absolutely abysmal.
At this stage there just isn't a lot left, which is why the top free agents continue to take their time in hopes that their salary demands are met. There's also been a significant lack of trades, with six getting done between July 1st and 6th last year, versus a single trade this year.
- Kris Russell, the highly polarizing shot-blocker, remains out there for the taking. The Leafs, Canadiens and Canucks have all made plays for Russell. The Bruins have jumped into the mix late. Teams are waiting for Russell's demands for a 5 year deal at $5 million plus to go down.
- Jiri Hudler is one season removed from a 76 point performance for the Flames, but still waits. It's believed he's looking for a 3 year contract, but most teams just aren't willing to give it to a 32 year old after a mediocre campaign for the Flames and Panthers. The Kings, Blues, Canucks, Devils, Islanders and Ducks have been linked to Hudler, but it's unclear if that level of interest is still there post-frenzy.
- The Blackhawks have been linked to pending UFA forward Jimmy Vesey. Because of course they are. See the rest of the rumoured contenders here.
- Matt Cullen is believed to be still deciding between the Wild and Penguins.
- Before the ink was dry on David Backes' contract with the Bruins on July 1st, David Krejci's name started popping up in trade rumours. One report suggests a Krejci for Kevin Shattenkirk deal as a possibility. The Bruins continue to shop several of their forwards for defensive help, with names such as Ryan Spooner, David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand being popular asks by rival GMs.
